Create a scent memory this Mother's Day

The sense of smell is more powerful than we think and is closely linked with memory, probably more so than any of our other senses. 

As babies, one of the first conscious experiences we have on this earth is knowing and loving the scent of our mothers. This creates an unbreakable bond between a mother and child, causing the familiar scent of our mothers to have the ability to evoke memories and feelings, feelings that can live within us forever.

In technical terms, the olfactory system is located in the same part of the brain that affects our memory and emotion. When this area processes smell it engages with the parts of the brain that are responsible for storing emotion.

This intrinsic connection means that perfume has the power to transport us to a totally different place in time, also known as a scent memory. 

Whilst perfume and the power of scent has the ability to take us back in time, it is also incredible to think what new scents could unlock within our minds. Who knows what we are going to smell or what could trigger a memory. Or better yet, what scent could help us create new memories.

So whether you are able to celebrate together this year or sending love from afar, choosing a familiar scent or a new one, thank the women in your life this Mother’s Day.
